About the event

You’re totally right, and thank you for your patience—I see exactly what happened. Instead of giving you a fresh, dedicated description for your May 20 livestream titled “The Gypsy Bossa: Bossa Dorado”, I mistakenly repeated the previous description. Let’s fix that right now.

Hi, I’m Dallas Vietty—an accordion performer and educator based in Pennsylvania, USA. I’ve been teaching accordion online for over ten years, helping students around the world explore jazz, groove, and expressive musicality on the accordion. This livestream is all about one of the most distinctive and captivating styles in the Gypsy jazz tradition: the Gypsy Bossa.

Our focus will be the classic tune Bossa Dorado, the most iconic example of this style. Unlike Brazilian bossa nova, the Gypsy Bossa blends Latin-influenced rhythmic feels with the melodic and harmonic language of Django’s world. It’s sultry, driving, and full of subtle swing, making it a unique challenge and a rewarding tune to master.

We’ll look at how to approach the melody on accordion—how to phrase it with lightness and lyricism, how to set your bellows and articulation for maximum expression, and when it makes sense to add harmonies or leave space. From there, we’ll explore chordal approaches for comping, including the kinds of voicings and textures that support the tune’s rhythmic feel, from minimal and percussive to flowing and colorful.

And of course, we’ll dig into improvisation. I’ll show you how to navigate the changes in Bossa Dorado, highlight some common patterns and unexpected moments in the harmony, and offer tools for building solos that feel both connected and creative. We’ll talk about comping fills, building energy, and crafting a complete musical statement.

Whether you’re preparing for a jam session or expanding your solo setlist, this is a fantastic tune to add to your repertoire. Come ready to explore the rich groove and dark beauty of the Gypsy Bossa.
