Livestream Description

Hi, I’m Dallas Vietty, accordion performer and educator based in Pennsylvania, USA. I teach online at RisingReed.com, where I help musicians grow their creativity, expression, and confidence on the accordion.

Today we begin our new series: Leadsheets in General: Decoding the Musician's Map. This session is all about unlocking the fundamental language of sheet music shorthand—the essential blueprint for freedom and flexibility in your playing.

We will explore how these seemingly simple documents—with their single-line melodies and lettered chord symbols—become the ultimate tool for interpretation, practice, and building your own unique musical identity on the bellows. Mastering this language is the single biggest step toward truly owning the music you play.

The silent conversation between the melody and the harmony is the heart of every lead sheet. While other instrumentalists must manually construct chord voicings, for us accordionists, the challenge is perfectly tailored to our instrument’s mechanics: translating the chord symbol (like G7 or Bbm) directly into the fixed, mechanical command of the Stradella Bass System (SBA). Our left hand is an instant chord generator, but we need to master the decoder ring to connect the symbols on the page to the correct, automatic chord button. We will spend dedicated time ensuring you can instantly make this essential connection, which is the cornerstone of playing fluently from a lead sheet.

This livestream serves as crucial navigational training. We will meticulously break down the map itself, focusing on understanding key signatures, time signatures, and following crucial roadmaps like repeats and codas. These are the foundational tools that allow you to adapt any tune—from a simple folk melody to a complex standard—and make it sound authentic and professional on the accordion. We will also introduce simple rhythmic exercises to help you internalize the pulse, ensuring that your playing is grounded in feel and flow.

Learning to decode a lead sheet empowers you to move beyond simply copying notes and to start making informed, interpretive choices about rhythm, accompaniment style, and dynamics. This freedom is an essential element of expression that aligns with the heart of the RisingReed philosophy. When you master this fundamental musical language, you gain the confidence to approach any piece of music, in any genre, with the full expressive and creative capacity of your instrument.

This foundational session is the start of a three-part journey that will lead us directly into applying these skills to dynamic holiday repertoire in the coming weeks. Our goal today is to build a strong theoretical foundation that will ensure your left and right hands work together with increasing precision, flow, and musical intention.

Come join the community, unlock a powerful musical language, and enjoy an evening dedicated to decoding the map that leads to boundless creativity on the accordion.
