Course Chapters

Chapter 1: Groove and Feeling (Rhythm)

Discover the core of blues music—its groove and rhythmic feel. Through exercises in counting, tapping, and singing simple 12/8 blues rhythms, you’ll internalize the swing and syncopation that make the blues so distinctive. Learn to:

• Play a simple left-hand blues pattern with a deep groove.

• Perform blues melodies while staying grounded in the 12/8 rhythm grid.

Chapter 2: Fills and Blues Scales (Improvisation)

Infuse your playing with the soul and energy of blues improvisation. This chapter will teach you how to use the blues scale expressively and create fills that bring life to your melodies. You’ll explore:

• The C blues scale and how to play it with soul and rhythm.

• Improvising fills in the spaces between melody lines, adding richness and personal flair.

Chapter 3: Accompany and Backup (Accompaniment)

Learn to create authentic and idiomatic blues accompaniment patterns. This chapter focuses on playing backup parts that complement the melody and other musicians while staying connected to your inner rhythm. You’ll master:

• Simple, bluesy accompaniment styles that groove.

• Two iconic blues turnaround figures to enhance your playing.

Chapter 4: Jamming on a 12-Bar Blues (Putting It All Together)

Bring everything together as you jam over the full 12-bar blues form. Develop your ability to navigate the structure confidently, find your place if you get lost, and record your blues performance. By the end of this chapter, you’ll:

• Jam over 3 choruses of blues.

• Create a recording of yourself playing the melody, fills, and accompaniment to a C blues progression.
